Grade 6

Grade 6 students embark on learning designed to meet the Maine learning results, build a solid base for the skills and concepts necessary to grow and succeed in up coming grade levels. Teachers may use supplementary materials and have enhanced learning opportunities beyond those listed here. Student schedules change in 5th grade. Students now have two teachers who each deliver a block each of their content area. One teacher delivers ELA and Social Studies, the other Science and Math. Teachers can integrate content areas and create enhanced learning opportunities for thier students.

ELA: Grade 6 students will be using the Units of Study for Grade 6 from Teachers College to move from foundational skills in reading to a further mastery of comprehension and fluency. In addition, The focus for reading and writing is on the workshop model, allowing for direct, personalized instruction in small groups. Students will address different genres of reading and writing with access to a range of texts.

Math: MSAD 72 Adopted the I ready Math. program for K-8 Math. The concepts covered in Grade 6 include: Area, Surface and Algebraic Expressions, Multi-digit Decimals, Ratios, Percents, Equivalent Expressions, One Variable Equations, and Positive and Negative Numbers.

Science: Grade 6 students will begin a three year program titled Issues and Science. This Issue-oriented science program helps students see how science is connected to their lives and communities. In Grade 6 the focus is on Earth Science, exploring Weather and Climate, Land , Water and Human Interactions, Earth’s Resources, Solar System and Beyond, and Geological Processes. This program is aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards, which are the standards the Maine Learning Results for Science are adapted.

Social Studies : Era: 1760-1880, Units include: Beginning Us Government, Civil War and Reconstruction, Westward Expansion, Industrialization, Immigration.
