Grade 5

Grade 5 students embark on learning designed to meet the Maine learning results, build a solid base for the skills and concepts necessary to grow and succeed in up coming grade levels. Teachers may use supplementary materials and have enhanced learning opportunities beyond those listed here. Student schedules change in 5th grade. Students now have two teachers who each deliver a block each of their content area. One teacher delivers ELA and Social Studies, the other Science and Math. Teachers can integrate content areas and create enhanced learning opportunities for their students.

ELA: Grade 5 students will be using the Units of Study for Grade 3 from Teachers College to move from foundational skills in reading to a further mastery of comprehension and fluency. In addition, The focus for reading and writing is on the workshop model, allowing for direct, personalized instruction in small groups. Students will address different genres of reading and writing with access to a range of texts.

Math: MSAD 72 Adopted the I-Ready Mathematics for K-8 Math. the concepts covered in Grade 5 include: Volume, Multiply and Divide Multi Digit numbers, Adding and Subtracting Fractions, Converting units, Using Data and Classifying Figures.

Science: Grade 5. teachers have access to Mystery Science Curriculum. They may however, utilize enhanced learning opportunities or integrate lessons with other content areas as well.

Grade 5 concepts include : Human Body, Vision and the Brain, Animal and Plant Adaptations, Earths features and Processes,

Sounds, Waves, and Communication, Energy and Energy Transfer and Electricity, Light and heat.

The units here cover more Next Gen Science Standards (NGSS). than are required by the Maine learning Results.

Social Studies : Era : 1300's to 1776 (Renaissance to Revolution) Units include: Colonization and Factors leading to the Revolution,The Revolution, Founding a Country,
